Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in women and a major cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the risk factors for the development of cervical cancer. The tumor suppressor protein p53 is involved in cell cycle regulation, DNA repair, and apoptosis in response to cellular stresses. The expression and function of p53 isoforms (p53α, p53β, and p53γ) are highly regulated. However, the expression and the functions of p53 isoforms in cervical cancer are unclear. In the present study, we investigated the expression of the three p53 isoforms in cervical samples of HPV-negative and HPV-positive women. We found that the p53β isoform was expressed in a significantly higher percentage of cervical cancer tissues than normal cervical tissues. In addition, both p53β and p53γ isoforms were more frequently expressed in HPV-positive cervical cancer tissues than in HPV-negative cervical cancer tissues. Using the ectopic expression of p53 isoforms in a cervical cancer cell line, we found that p53β, but not p53α or p53γ, induced apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. The presence of the p53β isoform in cervical cancer tissues and its induction of apoptosis in cervical cancer cells indicated that p53β may play an important role in cervical cancer development. The prevalence of the p53β isoform correlated with HPV infection and cervical cancer. Therefore, p53β may be a useful diagnostic marker for cervical cancer, especially in HPV-positive cervical cancer tissues.Influence of age on the development of the visual system: a comparison of development in the cat and rat.
